the journey through australia continues…well, through wine that is?! keith and i recently tried another bottle shipped from our newest wine club membership – the grand tour by verve wine. and again, we were not disappointed at all. this time we actually decided to try a white wine within the shipment. and honestly, this is a big change for us as we are typically red wine drinkers. however, this is one of the reasons that we decided to try out this membership – to help us expand on our tastings and try new things.
so what was our second selection? well based off our dinner selection of the night – cream-based pasta from one of our favorites, bella tuscany – we decided on the silkman semillon 2015 from hunter valley, new south wales (NSW). it’s recommended to pair this wine with clean and raw seafood, like crudo, ceviche, sushi, etc. however – i don’t eat fish, so we figured this would be a great second option. described as crisp with high acidity, this wine has waxy, chamomile aromas and flavors; which it actually paired really nicely with our fettuccine alfredo and carbonara pasta selections. it was a very refreshing wine and great for a nice sipping wine throughout dinner.
but more about the visionary team. the brains behind this wine is a husband and wife team shaun and liz silkman, who launched their own winery in 2013 after working at other top estates in NSW. and recently learning, the hunter valley is actually well-known for its dry, mineral-laden semillon – typically grown on the sandier white and grey soils and old river beds on the lower vineyards in the town of pokolbin. it’s truly amazing how all of these different types of wines thrive off different land and climates. something i cannot wait to learn more about throughout these shipments.
