well, our journey through piedmont is coming to a close…but what an adventure it was! i seriously am so glad that we invested in this wine club membership. we have learned so much AND have been able to try so many different wines, some that we never heard of prior to this. now our last selection was the wine that i was waiting for…the 2013 g.d. vajra albe barolo. as you all may have remembered from previous posts, barolo is my absolute favorite type of wine…so to say i was excited is a complete understatement.
so i little more about the vineyard and this delicious wine. g.d. vajra was actually founded in 1972 and 10 of its hectares are designated specifically to nebbiolo, which means it’s destined to become barolo. so what does that process look like?
fruit comes from three separate vineyards across the barolo commune, hailing from steep slopes and sustainably farmed land. grapes are hand picked and macerated for almost three weeks, vinified in a traditional style, then aged in slavonian oak casks. the final wine shows gorgeous red fruit and floral aromas; the palate is textured and spicy, with earthy nuances and supple tannins.
now we decided to pair up our wine selection with a delicious italian pasta dish – but it is also recommended to pair this wine with beef roasts, mushroom risotto and hard cheeses. oh, and truffle anything! and i must say, this wine totally lived up to everything we hoped it would be. the flavors and the pairing was absolutely perfect.
but only a few months until we get to travel to nyc AND our latest grand tour shipment is arriving soon! where do you think we are visiting next? visit grandtourwine.com for more information.
until next time
xoxo
